Ensuring safety at every step.
Nino is making it real.
It’s about returning home safely – every day! Safety Officer Nino van der Starre joined Elopak nearly 15 years ago, where he initially served as a Service Coordinator and later took on more responsibilities in technical and project manager roles. His journey has been marked by continuous growth and dedication to safety. This ultimately led him to his current position. Based in the Netherlands, he works to ensure that everyone who is travelling to and working at customer sites globally remains safe by following the highest safety standards.
A passion for safety - from butchery to sustainable packaging
Nino’s career path is as diverse as it is dedicated. He began his professional journey working in his family’s’ butchery, with an initial plan to take over the family business. However, his passion for technology led him to explore opportunities in the construction and petrochemical industries. It was during this time that Nino’s passion for safety was born.
Nino reflects on this period:
“I experienced closely people I knew being injured and even fatalities. That deeply affected me and fueled my commitment to safety. I wanted to ensure that injuries would never happen to my people.”
Choosing to be safe – a personal choice for all of us
For Nino, communication and a personal approach are key to building a safety culture. Regular service meetings, training sessions and safety newsletters are some of the strategies he uses to ensure that everyone is aligned and informed about safety.
“Zero injuries are possible to achieve. 80% of incidents are related to behavior, and it’s everyone’s responsibility and choice to act safely.”
He believes that patience, empathy, persistence, and thorough knowledge of safety are essential to succeed, and that good communication is crucial. It is all about repeating the risks we are facing daily, and how we can minimize them.
Proactively caring for each other
Nino’s main goal is to contribute and support as much he can to drive the safety culture in Elopak. He explains that commitment to safety is not just about following protocols; it’s about fostering a culture where every individual feels responsible for their own safety and the safety of their colleagues.
“Elopak is a company that truly cares for its people. The support I’ve received and the opportunities to grow professionally reflect our collective goal: ensuring zero harm and fostering a safe working environment for everyone. “
